Calzone Folded Pizza Perfection

A calzone is a folded Italian pastry or pizza turnover typically made from pizza dough. It’s similar to a pizza, but the ingredients are enclosed inside the dough and baked, resulting in a semi-circular or crescent-shaped pocket of goodness. A Calzone is the Italian version of the much loved Pasty!
Calzones are often filled with ingredients like mozzarella cheese, ricotta cheese, various meats (such as pepperoni, spicy sausage, bolognaise), vegetables, and sometimes tomato sauce.

Get the Children Involved

Calzone is the perfect dish to get the children involved with cooking. Fun to put together and simple to assemble, Calzone is the perfect way to get the kids into the kitchen and start to learn about recipes, food hygiene, cooking and where our food comes from.
The dough is folded over and sealed to encase the filling, then baked until golden and crispy.  Calzones can be customized with a variety of ingredients to suit your individual preferences. They’re a popular Italian dish and are often served as a delicious and portable meal option.

Although no specific date is determined, the history of the calzone goes back as far as the 18th century. Its moon-shaped design is believed to come from a pizza that was folded over and indicates that they weren’t meant to be eaten with utensils. In Italy, they’re typically sold by street vendors. Their pizza-like dough allows them to be portable and eaten on the go.

Calzones are traditionally stuffed with cheese, tomatoes, and marinara. But much like the pizza, any sort of toppings can be added inside the calzone. We added a simple bolognaise sauce.
